The Summer Snow Emergency: When Cottonwoods Take Over the Sky
It was eighty-two degrees along the river, the sun was shining, and something white was drifting through the forest.
Otto immediately opened his field notes.
Echo immediately filed a weather complaint.
Fortunately, the forest was not experiencing a highly localized summer snowstorm. The fluffy material floating through the air was black cottonwood seed floss—an impressive seed-dispersal system that turns riverbanks into botanical snow globes and ravens into unwilling collection surfaces.
Not Snow—and Not Pollen
Despite its suspiciously fluffy appearance, cottonwood “snow” is not pollen.
Black cottonwoods (Populus trichocarpa) are usually dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate trees. Male trees produce pollen earlier in the season. Female trees develop hanging clusters of tiny capsules, each packed with minute seeds.
When the capsules ripen, they split open and release seeds attached to long, silky white hairs. According to Oregon State University Extension, those small capsules change from green to a duller color before opening and exposing the familiar white fluff.
The fluff acts like a botanical parachute. It catches the slightest breeze and carries the seed away from its parent tree.

Built for Unlicensed Air Travel
Black cottonwood seeds are tiny, light and buoyant. Their silky fibers help them travel long distances on both wind and water.
This is particularly useful for a tree that naturally grows beside rivers, streams, floodplains and other places where the landscape is regularly rearranged. A seed released upstream may float through the air, land on the water and eventually wash onto a newly formed sandbar.
The USDA Forest Service’s black cottonwood profile notes that the trees commonly produce abundant seed crops every year. In Oregon and Washington, dispersal often occurs from late May through June, while populations farther inland may continue releasing seeds into July.
This explains why a perfectly warm summer afternoon can suddenly look like the forest skipped several months ahead.

Cottonwood seeds may travel widely, but their opportunity to become trees is surprisingly brief.
Under natural conditions, black cottonwood seeds may remain viable for only a few weeks. They need to land somewhere moist quickly—preferably on bare, exposed soil with little competing vegetation.
Fresh river deposits provide exactly that kind of seedbed. Floodwater can remove existing plants, deposit new layers of silt and leave behind open, damp ground. Cottonwood seeds arrive in enormous numbers and germinate rapidly when conditions are right.
Most will not survive. Some land on rocks. Others become caught in dry grass, drift into unsuitable shade or settle somewhere that dries before their roots become established.
Producing thousands of traveling seeds gives the tree more chances to find one small patch of suitable ground.
It is less a carefully organized planting strategy and more a forest-wide application process.

Why Cottonwoods Make Such a Spectacle
From the tree’s perspective, releasing an unreasonable amount of fluff is perfectly practical.
Each seed is inexpensive to produce, but its chances of finding the right combination of moisture, light and exposed soil are small. The solution is quantity: release enough seeds across a wide enough area, and a few may reach the damp ground needed to begin a new stand.
The silky fibers do not feed the seed or help it grow after landing. Their job is transportation. Once the seed reaches the ground, the fluff has completed its assignment.
It may then collect along trails, gather in corners, cling to clothing and become permanently involved with Echo’s feathers.
Nature is efficient, although not always considerate.
More Than Tree Confetti
Black cottonwoods are fast-growing trees with an important role in streamside forests.
By quickly colonizing freshly exposed riverbanks, young cottonwoods begin rebuilding vegetation after floods and other disturbances. As the trees grow, their roots help stabilize soil, while their canopies provide shade along the water.
Mature cottonwoods also create valuable wildlife habitat. Their branches offer nesting and perching sites, their foliage supports insects and herbivores, and older trunks can develop cavities used by birds and other animals.
A mature cottonwood grove is more than a collection of trees. It is part of the structure of the riverbank—a living system that helps connect water, soil and wildlife habitat.
The floating seeds may look chaotic, but they are the beginning of that process.
Echo acknowledges the ecological benefits.
He would simply prefer that they occur somewhere else.
How to Recognize Black Cottonwood
If you encounter a summer “snowstorm,” look for a large deciduous tree growing near water.
Black cottonwood leaves are generally broad and triangular to somewhat heart-shaped, with pointed tips and finely toothed margins. The leaves often flutter in the breeze on flattened stalks.
Female trees carry long, hanging fruiting structures lined with small capsules. Once ripe, those capsules open and release the white, silky seeds.
The white material floating through the air is therefore a clue that a female cottonwood is nearby—even if the tree itself is hidden among the surrounding canopy.
Listen carefully and you may also hear a raven muttering about unauthorized departures.
