The Old Giant
Some trees make sure you notice them. They lean over the trail, drop cones on your head, and hold their branches out into the light like they've been waiting all morning for an audience.
The big ones don't bother.
They just stand there, and everything else in the forest starts to feel provisional.
Otto and Echo found one of those while hiking through an old-growth stand. For once, even Echo looked up.
A Trail Through Old Growth
"This trail passes through an old-growth stand," Otto announced.
"So the trees are older than your lectures?"
The thing about an old-growth forest is that it doesn't look tidy, and that's the point. A young stand is uniform — trees of the same age, the same height, planted or seeded at the same moment, all reaching for the same light. Old growth is a mess of stages happening at once. Enormous trunks with nothing beneath them for a hundred feet. Standing dead snags full of holes. Logs across the floor in every phase of collapse, some of them soft enough to sink a paw into, several of them with a row of young hemlocks growing straight down the spine.
Nothing is finished and nothing is wasted. Everything is either being built or taken apart, usually both.
Otto was gearing up to explain all of this at length when he stopped in the middle of the trail and tipped his head back.
"Echo. Look up."
Meeting the Giant
The trunk went up like a column and kept going. Bark in deep reddish ridges, furrowed like canyon walls, wide enough at the base that the two of them standing beside it looked like a rounding error. The crown was somewhere far overhead, out of sight in the canopy.
"A Douglas-fir," Otto said. "The largest one I've ever seen."
Echo considered it. "It appears to have won."
There was no visible competition, but he wasn't wrong. Something had clearly been settled here a long time ago.
Worth noting, since Otto certainly would: a Douglas-fir isn't a fir. It isn't a hemlock, spruce, or pine either. Botanists spent decades shuffling it between genera before giving up and inventing one — Pseudotsuga, "false hemlock," which is less a classification than an admission of defeat. The easy field mark is the cone. Douglas-fir cones have little three-pronged bracts poking out between the scales, and the standard story is that they're the hind feet and tail of a mouse who dove in headfirst and didn't quite make it.
More Than a Thousand Years
Otto put a paw on the bark. "Old-growth Douglas-firs can live for more than a thousand years."
That number is hard to hold in your head, so try it from the other direction: a tree like this was a seedling before the printing press, before most of the languages you'd recognize sounded the way they sound now. Everything you learned in a history class happened while it was standing here putting on rings.
It got that old partly by being hard to kill. The bark on a mature Douglas-fir can exceed a foot in thickness — corky, deeply fissured, and remarkably good insulation. Fires that clear out the understory and take the thin-barked competition go through and leave the big ones scorched but alive. A lot of old-growth giants aren't the biggest tree that ever grew on that spot. They're the one that was standing when the fire came through, and then had two hundred years of open sunlight to themselves.
What You Can't See From Down Here
Otto stared up into the crown. "Imagine everything this tree has outlived."
Echo glanced at the notebook. "And it never once needed a field notebook."
That seemed unnecessarily personal.
But here's the part that makes it worse for Otto: the interesting half of this tree is unreachable.
Old Douglas-fir crowns aren't simple. Centuries of broken tops, forked leaders, and massive lateral limbs turn them into a structure — platforms and forks and hollows, with mats of moss accumulating on the big branches until they compress into actual soil. Not soil that fell up there. Soil that formed up there, complete with its own roots, fungi, and invertebrates, dozens of stories above the ground.
Things live in it. Red tree voles spend their entire lives in Douglas-fir canopies eating the needles, building nests out of discarded resin ducts, and in many cases never touching the forest floor at all. Marbled murrelets — seabirds, genuinely, birds that feed in the ocean — fly inland at dawn and lay a single egg directly on a mossy limb. Nobody knew where marbled murrelets nested until 1974, when a tree climber in California found a chick on a branch and closed a gap in the ornithological record that had been open for over a century.
All of that was happening above Otto's head, and none of it was going to make it into the notebook.
Below him it was no better. The root system was tangled into a fungal network trading sugar for minerals with organisms he'd never see, connected to trees he hadn't met.
The Bottom One Percent
"I don't even know where to begin," Otto admitted.
Echo looked at the base of the trunk, which was the only portion of this tree either of them could reach.
"The bottom one percent seems well documented."
He had a point, and it was a better one than he probably intended. You can measure the circumference. You can identify the species, count the cones, note the bark scars and the woodpecker holes and the ferns growing out of a crevice at shoulder height. And you will have described the visible fraction of a life that started before anyone was keeping records.
The rest is up in the canopy or down in the soil or already finished, centuries ago, without an audience.
A Different Kind of Quiet
They stayed a while.
Otto didn't launch into anything. Echo didn't ask about snacks. Wind moved through something a long way up. Water came off a fern onto the trail.
There are silences that feel empty. Old forests don't do that one. This one felt occupied — like standing in a room where a great deal of work is being done very slowly by everyone present.
The tree had been doing it for a thousand years and was not planning to stop on their account.
Otto's Field Note: Next time you pass a genuinely old tree, stop for a minute before you walk on. Look at the bark — the scars, the cavities, the lichens, the old fire char if it's there. Then look up and follow the trunk until you lose it.
Consider how little of it you're actually seeing. The canopy is its own ecosystem, the roots are wired into a network you'll never map, and the first eight hundred years happened without witnesses.
You will never see more than the bottom one percent.
It's still a good place to start.
