The Great Moss Debate

Field notes: fallen Douglas-fir, west-facing slope, mid-morning. Air damp. Observer enthusiastic. Second observer present under protest.

Otto has never met a moss-covered log he was willing to simply walk past. This one stops him about forty feet from the cabin, which by his standards is excellent progress.

"Echo, look! This log has at least three different moss species on it."

"Congratulations to the log."

That exchange is the whole argument in miniature, and it would be easy to score it for Otto — he's the one with the field guide, after all. But Echo says something later in the morning that is more correct than either of them realizes, and it takes a while to get there. So start with the log.

Three Kinds of Green

Out comes the magnifying glass. "See the texture differences? This one is feathery, this one is tufted, and this one is gloriously excessive."

Set aside the third category for a moment. The first two are a real distinction, and it's the single most useful thing an amateur can learn about moss.

Some mosses grow outward — sprawling, branching, weaving flat mats across logs and soil, with their spore capsules emerging from side branches. Bryologists call these pleurocarpous. They're Otto's feathery ones: step moss (Hylocomium splendens), lacy and layered, and Oregon beaked moss (Kindbergia oregana), which carpets half the forest floor between here and the Sound.

Others grow upward — dense little towers packed shoulder to shoulder into cushions, each stem topped by its own capsule. Acrocarpous. Otto's tufted ones. Broom moss (Dicranum scoparium) is the giveaway: a tight tuft with every leaf swept to one side, as though the whole colony got caught in a wind that stopped years ago.

Once you have those two shapes in your head, you can't unsee them. A log stops being green and starts being sorted.

As for gloriously excessive — that's almost certainly electrified cat's tail moss (Rhytidiadelphus triquetrus), which is a real name for a real plant, and it earned it. Otto did not invent a category. He simply arrived at the same conclusion as the people who named it, using fewer syllables.

Step moss deserves one more line, because it's the closest thing the forest has to a wall calendar. It grows in tiers, each new year's frond arching up from the middle of the last one. You can count the steps and read off the seasons. A patch with six tiers has been sitting on that log, quietly, since before the log finished falling.

"So it's a log with a diary," Echo said.

Yes. That's exactly what it is.

Why It's Always Damp Down There

Otto's next defense, delivered when Echo strays too close to a patch:

"Careful! That patch is a delicate micro-ecosystem."

"It's dirt wearing a sweater."

"No, it is a moisture-loving colony of tiny botanical greatness."

"That sentence made the forest quieter."

Echo is right about the sentence. Otto is right about the moisture, and for a better reason than he gave.

Mosses have no vascular tissue — no plumbing to lift water from the ground into the body of the plant. What look like roots are rhizoids, which anchor and little else. A moss drinks through its entire surface, which means it can only be as wet as the air around it.

More to the point: moss sex requires standing water. Male and female organs sit at the tips of the leafy shoots, and the sperm have to swim — through a film of rain, dew, or fog, across a distance measured in centimeters, to reach an egg on a neighboring plant. This is why moss lives where it does. Not preference. Logistics.

What follows is the part worth crouching for. A fertilized egg grows into something that doesn't look like moss at all: a bare stalk topped with a capsule, rising out of the green like a tiny streetlamp. That stalk is a separate generation — a different organism, genetically distinct from the carpet, spending its whole short life rooted in its own parent. The green is one generation. The stalks are the next one, standing on its shoulders.

The capsule mouth is ringed with teeth that respond to humidity, curling open in dry air and clamping shut in wet. Spores only leave when conditions favor travel. A moss that cannot move, cannot see, and cannot think has nonetheless worked out how to wait for a clear day.

And when the clear days go on too long, most of these mosses simply stop. They dry to a brittle brown, shut down entirely, and hold — for weeks, in some cases far longer — until rain returns. Then they green up within minutes. Not survival exactly. More like pausing.

The tardigrades living in the water film between the leaves do the same thing on the same schedule. When the moss dries, they curl into dormancy. When it rains, everybody wakes up at once.

Echo Was Right, Backwards

Here is where the morning turns.

"It's dirt wearing a sweater" is the funniest thing said on that trail and also the most nearly accurate, provided you reverse it. The sweater is not lying on top of the dirt.

The sweater is making the dirt.

Moss mats catch what falls — needles, pollen, grit, spider silk, insect parts, the general drift of a forest — and hold it against wind and rain until it rots. That's soil. Not soil-adjacent, not a step toward soil. Soil, being manufactured in a green mat about two centimeters thick, on a surface that had no soil on it at all.

This is how a fallen log becomes a nursery. Bare wood is a poor place to be a seed. Moss-covered wood is damp, sheltered, and free of the leaf litter that smothers seedlings on the forest floor — which is why a nurse log ends up with a row of western hemlocks growing along its spine, evenly spaced, all the same age, marking a line where a tree used to be.

It happens overhead, too. Bigleaf maples in these forests carry mats of moss on their limbs, and over decades those mats build up several centimeters of true soil a hundred feet in the air. The maple's response is to grow roots out of its own branches, down into the soil the moss made, and drink from it.

The tree is feeding on dirt that the sweater knitted.

"I'm not retracting anything," Echo said.

Nobody asked her to.

Different Departments

By the time all this is settled, Otto has produced FIELD NOTES, which is a stage of the morning with its own weather.

"Attention everyone. Otto has developed emotional dependence on sidewalk fuzz."

"It is not sidewalk fuzz."

"I'm documenting biodiversity."

Echo, head fully inside the trail mix: "I'm documenting snacks. We all serve science differently."

She's not wrong, and she's not really joking either. Everything on that log — the moss, the tardigrades in the water film, the raven going through the bag — is doing the same job from a different angle. Take what the forest is offering. Hold onto it. Turn it into something the next thing can use.

Three species. Three growth forms. Two of them formally correct.


The Moral

The green stuff on the log isn't decoration on top of the forest. Given enough time — and moss has nothing but time — it's the part that builds the ground everything else stands on. Look down more.
