The Cone Inventory

Some things in the forest ask to be investigated.

A track pressed into stream mud. A fungus shouldering out of a rotten stump. A scatter of feathers beneath a hemlock, arranged in a way that tells you something happened there even if the animal responsible is long gone.

And then there is the thing Otto nearly walked into:

an enormous heap of dismantled Douglas-fir cones banked against a rotting log.

Stripped scales covered the surface like wood shavings. Chewed cone cores disappeared into deeper layers. Some material looked fresh. Some looked as though it had been there for years.

No squirrel anywhere in sight.

It looked abandoned.

It looked like something the forest had done by accident.

Otto stopped.

He got his pencil out.

Echo, watching from the log with the expression of a raven who had seen this movie before, offered his assessment.

“Congratulations. You’re trespassing in retail.”

He was not entirely joking.

The owner arrived within four seconds to confirm it.

Small.

Reddish-brown.

Very alert.

And standing on top of the cone pile like Otto had just wandered through a restricted loading dock.

“Step away from the inventory.”

And with that, Otto and Echo officially met their Douglas squirrel neighbor.

The Pile Is Not a Pile

What Otto walked into is called a midden.

Once you know what a midden is, a random heap of chewed-up cones becomes something much more interesting.

Douglas squirrels rely heavily on the seeds inside conifer cones. Instead of eating everything immediately, they can harvest and store cones around central food-storage areas. Repeated feeding leaves behind stripped scales and cone cores, and over time those remains can accumulate into substantial piles.

A midden may be used again and again, creating layers of squirrel activity beneath the forest floor.

To a hiker passing by, it can look like debris.

To Otto, it is an ecological record.

To Echo, it is commercial property.

To the squirrel, it is none of Otto’s business.

“A Douglas squirrel!” Otto says, already writing.

Echo studies the tiny animal currently confronting two creatures several times its size.

“Very small. Extremely intense.”

That is a fairly complete field description.

Centralized Squirrel Logistics

Many animals scatter stored food among numerous hiding places.

A jay, for example, may carry seeds away individually and cache them across a broad area. Spread the risk around. Lose a few caches, keep the rest.

Douglas squirrels take a much more centralized approach.

Important food reserves can be concentrated around a defended midden and nearby storage sites.

That makes the location extremely valuable.

This is not simply a pile of lunch leftovers.

It represents future meals.

Hours of harvesting.

Territory.

Preparation for seasons when food becomes harder to find.

Which makes the squirrel’s attitude easier to understand.

“These are sorted by freshness, weight, and strategic importance.”

Otto pauses.

Echo looks at him.

The squirrel looks at both of them.

Is there really a tiny squirrel accounting system operating beneath the Douglas-firs?

Probably not in quite those terms.

But the seriousness behind the joke is real.

The squirrel is not guarding clutter.

He is guarding survival.

Otto looks delighted.

“He’s magnificent.”

Echo recognizes the situation immediately.

“He’s a hostile accountant.”

Why Damp Matters

Here is where the squirrel warehouse becomes more impressive.

Conifer cones respond to changes in moisture.

As cones dry, their scales can open, allowing seeds to escape. Under more humid conditions, the scales remain more tightly closed.

That works beautifully for the tree.

Dry weather is a good time to release lightweight seeds into moving air.

It is considerably less convenient for a squirrel hoping those seeds will still be inside the cone months from now.

So cool, shaded, moist places beneath logs, within forest duff, and around midden material can provide useful conditions for stored cones.

In simple terms:

The tree wants the cone to open.

The squirrel would very much prefer that inventory remain on the premises.

Otto kneels beside the midden.

“So the cooler, damper conditions may help slow the cones from opening.”

Echo examines the pile.

“Climate-controlled retail.”

A small paw appears between them.

“Farther.”

Otto scoots backward.

The paw remains extended.

Otto moves another foot.

Still pointing.

Otto moves again.

Peer review can be harsh.

Two Foods, Two Completely Different Problems

Cones are not the squirrel’s entire menu.

Douglas squirrels can also make use of fungi, berries, buds, and other available foods.

And fungi create a completely different storage problem.

A cone benefits from staying cool and moist enough that it does not immediately dry and open.

A mushroom stored wet is likely to become something considerably less useful.

So squirrels have been observed placing fungi in branches, bark crevices, or other elevated spots where they can dry before being eaten later.

Think about what that means.

Down near the forest floor:

cool, damp cone storage.

Up in the branches:

mushrooms drying in moving air.

Same squirrel.

Same forest.

Opposite storage problems.

Different solutions.

Otto looks upward.

“So somewhere around here there might be mushrooms drying in the trees.”

Echo follows his gaze.

“Specialty foods.”

The Douglas squirrel narrows his eyes.

Otto closes his notebook slightly.

“We’re not looking.”

“Good.”

The accounting department has expanded into delicatessen operations.

The Harvest Window

Late summer can be an especially busy time in conifer country.

Stand beneath the right tree and cones may begin hitting the ground.

Not drifting gracefully.

Dropping.

Sometimes in bursts.

Sometimes closer to your head than you would prefer.

A squirrel harvesting cones can work above you in the canopy, cutting or dislodging them and later collecting the fallen crop.

Timing matters.

If cones remain on the tree until they dry and open, seeds begin leaving on their own.

From the Douglas-fir’s perspective, excellent.

From the squirrel’s perspective, inventory loss.

So harvest can become a frantic seasonal operation.

Up the trunk.

Across the branches.

Cone down.

Another cone.

Back to the ground.

Carry.

Store.

Repeat.

For an animal that weighs very little, the volume of work can be remarkable.

Otto watches the squirrel race past carrying a cone.

“Remarkably industrious.”

The squirrel returns in the opposite direction.

Then crosses again.

Then again.

Echo has not changed position.

“He’s making us look bad.”

He Is Not Being Dramatic. He Is Being Solvent.

Why does a small forest animal need this much preparation?

Because food supply is not perfectly predictable.

Conifers do not necessarily produce identical cone crops every year. Some seasons bring abundance. Others are considerably leaner.

Large seed crops can overwhelm the combined appetites of seed predators, allowing some seeds to escape consumption and eventually germinate.

For the squirrel, however, the practical lesson is much simpler:

When food is abundant, work.

When food is scarce, live on what you managed to save.

That makes the frantic cone harvest feel less like obsessive hoarding and more like what it really is:

planning.

A squirrel has limited time and energy. Some food items are more worthwhile to collect and store than others. Choosing what to carry, what to eat immediately, and what to leave behind is part of making that effort pay off.

So when the comic turns cone storage into inventory management, the joke is not very far removed from the biology.

Every cone may not literally have a spreadsheet entry.

But every trip costs energy.

Every stored meal matters.

And winter does not care how tired you were in September.

Otto writes something quickly.

Echo peers over his shoulder.

“What did you put?”

“Efficient seasonal resource allocation.”

Echo nods toward the squirrel.

“He said that already.”

The Midden Is a History Book

One of the best things about a midden is that you do not need to see the squirrel for the site to tell you something.

Look carefully and you may find:

stripped cone scales,

chewed cores,

fresh material near the surface,

older remains underneath,

feeding debris,

small tunnels or cavities,

and other signs of repeated activity.

The forest rarely labels its stories.

Instead, it leaves evidence.

Tracks crossing mud.

Gnaw marks in bark.

Feathers beneath a perch.

Seeds hidden in crevices.

Holes in rotten logs.

Cone scales beneath a tree.

This may be Otto’s favorite thing about being outside.

A place that looks ordinary at first can become completely different once you understand what you are looking at.

A messy pile becomes a feeding site.

A feeding site becomes a storage system.

A storage system becomes winter survival.

And suddenly the forest floor has a biography.

This is why Otto always carries Field Notes.

It is also why Echo rarely gets the quiet walk he was promised.

What the Midden Feeds

The midden is not an isolated little squirrel economy.

Nothing in the forest really is.

Douglas squirrels eat seeds and fungi.

Predators eat squirrels.

Other small animals may investigate or steal stored food.

Fungi and microorganisms work through organic material accumulating on the forest floor.

Seeds that escape being eaten may eventually become seedlings.

Squirrels moving fungi through the forest can also help move fungal spores from place to place.

One small animal collecting food is connected to trees, fungi, predators, soil, weather, and the next generation of forest.

Otto stares at the midden.

“This whole pile is part of a much larger system.”

Echo looks down at a single cone scale.

“Everything always turns into a system with you.”

“That’s because it is.”

Echo considers this.

“Annoying.”

Otto’s Field Notes

Douglas squirrel — Tamiasciurus douglasii.

Midden actively used. Large accumulation of Douglas-fir cone scales and cores beside rotting log. Fresh material present near surface.

Subject extremely alert.

Subject extremely vocal.

Subject appears to consider observation from any distance less than approximately one county unacceptable.

Did not approach further.

Sketched from a respectful distance.

Would very much like to know how long this site has been used.

Note for tomorrow: check nearby branch forks for drying mushrooms.

Echo’s Field Notes

Encountered a sole proprietor.

Facility appears well managed. Multiple storage requirements. Security handled in-house.

Owner declined to discuss operations, methodology, inventory procedures, or our presence.

He was correct that we were standing in his shop.

A Steller’s jay observed the entire exchange from forty feet up without comment.

I know that look.

That is not curiosity. That is due diligence.

Something is eventually going to happen to this man’s cones, and it will not be us.

Otto has decided the squirrel is charming.

He is not charming.

He is a very small man with a very good ledger, and I respect him.

A New Forest Neighbor

For Otto, the Douglas squirrel is almost irresistible.

There is food caching to study.

Seasonal behavior.

Conifer ecology.

Territoriality.

Middens.

Fungi.

Forest clues.

And an animal willing to loudly object to every stage of the investigation.

For Echo, the relationship is more complicated.

The squirrel values secure food storage.

Echo values secure food.

Those concepts are extremely similar until one of them belongs to somebody else.

For now, relations remain peaceful.

Provided Otto and Echo follow the posted regulations:

Do not touch the cones.

Do not rearrange the cones.

Do not inspect the cones without authorization.

Do not stand too close to the cones.

Do not ask how many cones there are.

Do not look as though you are mentally counting the cones.

And under absolutely no circumstances suggest that one might be missing.

The Forest Usually Has a Reason

Otto first looked at the midden and saw a pile.

Then he looked closer.

That is usually when the interesting part begins.

The forest is full of structures that read as mess until you know what they are for.

A heap of chewed cones under a log can be food storage.

A damp patch of forest floor can become part of a squirrel’s winter strategy.

A branch fork can become a mushroom drying rack.

An angry little animal can be defending months of work.

What looks chaotic from the trail may be part of an extraordinarily effective plan.

Otto sees natural history.

Echo sees a business.

The squirrel sees two enormous unauthorized visitors standing beside secured assets.

Everybody is basically correct.

Otto closes his notebook.

“He’s magnificent.”

Echo watches the squirrel straighten one cone along the edge of the midden.

“He’s a hostile accountant.”

The squirrel stops.

Looks down.

Looks left.

Looks right.

Then slowly turns toward Otto.

“We’re missing one.”

Echo immediately steps away.

“I would like the record to show that I have been opposed to this investigation from the beginning.”

Otto opens his notebook again.

The Douglas squirrel climbs to the highest point of the midden.

Somewhere above them, a blue shape shifts silently on a branch.

Echo notices.

“Oh, no.”

The squirrel points at the inventory.

Otto raises his pencil.

And the forest accounting department officially opens an investigation.
